Iolite

Iolite is a lovely blue to violet blue gemstone. The name comes from the Greek ios, which means violet. The Vikings probably mined iolite from deposits in Norway and Green land. Viking sailors used iolite as a polarizing filter to find the sun on cloudy days for a safe offshore navigation; it is known as the Viking Compass. Also called the Water Sapphire, its healing properties are said to bring harmony and well-being to personal relationships. Iolite is also said to help bring on visions.
