Layering Necklaces

Many women come into our stores looking for help with "layering".  This is a very fashionable, cool look that can be either casual or dressy, depending on the necklaces you choose to wear together.   There are a few key things to keep in mind to make this look really work for you.

  • Length- each necklace should be a slightly different length, so when you wear them together you see each one separately. You can do a long layered look, or keep it close to the neck- but you don't want all the necklaces jumbled together because it can look messy or just "wrong".
  • Don't overdo it!  The "layered look" is most successful when you keep the number of necklaces under 7.  Usually 2-5 necklaces of slightly different lengths is all that is needed.  That said, you can go really crazy with LOTS of necklaces for a fabulous look- but you need confidence and moxie to pull this off!
  • Find a theme and work it!
    • Color: wear a few necklaces in the same color spectrum and play with the sizes of stones and the length.  This also applies to pearls- wear a few necklaces of different lengths with different size pearls, but keep the color all white (or black, or gold etc)
    • Size:  Keep the chains/stones/pearls in a similar size/shape, but play with the colors & lengths.  This gives you a slightly more eclectic, artistic vibe, but still keeps the look unified.
  • Mixed Metals:  I am a fan of wearing gold & silver together, and sometimes I will throw "antiqued" or blackened silver in the mix for a tougher "rock chic" vibe.  I also love to wear multiple chains of different sizes & metal types together with pearls or stones…this is where you have to use your own best judgment about what works, and what doesn't.

Layering with Pendants or "Charms"-  We have many fun charms for you to layer on our charm necklaces, making it easy to mix and match drops & necklaces of different colors/lengths.  You can wear one necklace, but "layer" multiple charms on it for a fun, jumbled, personalized look.  Or you can wear multiple necklaces with one necklace sporting the charm(s).

  • Layering with an Heirloom Pendant or "keepsake"- so you want to wear Grandma's cameo, or Mom's wedding ring on a chain, but you want to modernize the look to keep it from looking to "precious" or old fashioned.  Layering is a great way to do it.  Just keep the other tips listed  above in mind.  Additionally, you can "cluster" other pendants, drops, or fun charms together with your heirloom to keep it fresh and youthful.

Wearing LONG & SHORT Together- Choose a short necklace, or a choker and wear it with a complimentary long opera length chain.  This is actually a look from Elizabethan and Victorian times, but looks really modern and fun today. Just keep the necklaces fairly similar in color and/or size and it will look more "put together".

Of course, there are no RULES for true style mavens- so remember to have fun and express yourself regardless of what ANYONE else says!
